When organizations invest in team development, choosing the right assessment can make a significant difference. Two of the most widely recognized options are the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) and Everything DiSC®.
Both can improve self-awareness, communication, and teamwork—but they provide different lenses for understanding people. At Horizon Team Design, we believe the best question isn’t “Which assessment is better?” It’s: "What does your team need to understand or do differently?"
What Is the MBTI Assessment?
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) explores preferences in four areas:
Extraversion (E) or Introversion (I): how people direct and receive energy
Sensing (S) or Intuition (N): how people take in information
Thinking (T) or Feeling (F): how people approach decisions
Judging (J) or Perceiving (P): how people approach the outer world
Together, these preferences form the 16 MBTI personality types.
For teams, however, the value goes well beyond identifying a four-letter type. MBTI provides a shared framework for understanding why capable people can approach the same situation very differently.
In a facilitated MBTI team workshop, participants can explore differences in communication, decision-making, problem-solving, change, and collaboration.
MBTI may be a good fit when your team wants to:
Build deeper self-awareness
Understand and appreciate different perspectives
Improve communication
Strengthen decision-making and problem-solving
Explore responses to change and stress
Better leverage cognitive diversity
MBTI is particularly effective when the goal is to help people understand the preferences underlying how they approach their work and one another.
What Is Everything DiSC?
Everything DiSC focuses on workplace behavior and interpersonal dynamics. Its four primary styles are:
Dominance (D): direct and results-oriented
Influence (i): outgoing and enthusiastic
Steadiness (S): patient and supportive
Conscientiousness (C): analytical and precise
Rather than simply placing people into four categories, Everything DiSC uses a circular model to illustrate an individual’s behavioral tendencies and their relationship to other styles.
This makes DiSC highly accessible for conversations about how people interact and how they can adapt their behavior to work more effectively with others.
Everything DiSC may be a good fit when your team wants to:
Improve day-to-day communication
Strengthen working relationships
Navigate conflict more effectively
Develop adaptable leadership behaviors
Understand different workplace priorities
Create practical strategies for collaboration
MBTI vs. DiSC: What’s the Difference?
Both assessments can support stronger teams, but they emphasize different aspects of individual and team dynamics.
MBTI primarily explores psychological preferences—including how people tend to gather information, make decisions, and approach the world. It can help teams understand why people may approach the same situation differently.
Everything DiSC primarily explores behavioral tendencies and how those behaviors influence workplace interactions. It can help teams examine how they show up with one another and where adapting their approach may improve collaboration.
Neither assessment is inherently better. The right choice depends on the outcome you want from your team development workshop.
Start With the Team, Not the Assessment
Before choosing MBTI, DiSC, or another team assessment, consider a more important question:
What do you want to be different after the workshop?
Perhaps your team needs to improve communication, navigate conflict, make decisions more effectively, strengthen trust, or establish better working relationships. A leadership team may need to align around priorities, while a team experiencing change may need to better understand different reactions and needs.
Those objectives should determine the tool—not the other way around.
In some cases, MBTI will provide the right framework. In others, Everything DiSC may be a stronger fit. And sometimes the best team development program may not require an assessment at all.
Turning Assessment Insights Into Team Development
An assessment report alone rarely changes how a team works.
The value comes from facilitated conversation and practical application: recognizing differences, discussing their impact, establishing shared expectations, and identifying specific ways to work together more effectively going forward.
At Horizon Team Design, assessments are tools within a broader, customized approach to team and leadership development. If you’re considering an MBTI or DiSC workshop and aren’t sure which approach is right for your team, Horizon Team Design can help you identify the right tool—and design the experience around the outcomes your organization wants to achieve.
